BROWNING (Elizabeth Barrett)
BROWNING (Elizabeth Barrett) Carte de Visite Mrs. Browning and Son,   Williams & Everett, Silsbee, Case & Co. [1861]
image 3¼ x 2¼ ins.
One of the last photographs of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), and her son Robert Wiedeman Barrett Browning, known as Pen Browning, (9 March 1849 – 8 July 1912). She campaigned for the abolition of slavery, and her work helped influence reform in the child labour legislation. Her prolific output made her a rival to Tennyson as a candidate for poet laureate on the death of Wordsworth. The imprint of the two Boston publishers confirms Elizabeth's popularity in America and influence on writers of the day the day, including the poets Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson.
