Mary Kingsley's book was first published, it caused a sensation. From a mostly self educated woman, sister of the famous Churchman and author of the Water Babies, came this extraordinary work of travel, anthropological observation and above all of great humour. it quickly ran to further editions and was followed by West African Studies. Mary Kingsley died of typhoid in the early hours of 3 June 1900, having nursed casualties of the Boer War in South Africa.
