18TH CENTURY TROMPE L'OEIL OTTOMAN LETTERS
Manuscript on paper, with 17 lines of black diwani and naskh written in three blocks on the diagonal gold and polychrome rosette verse markers, small floral flourishes around, panels of gold and polychrome illumination between, 37.5 x 24.7cm.
The panel comprises two letters in Ottoman Turkish. The first is addressed to the writer's brother, a certain Sultanim Efendi and accompanied a gift of a rose sherbet. The lower panel which is signed conveys wishes for the restoration of the health of the recipient. In the bottom right corner are samples of chancery hand, including one mentioning the Defterdar Efendi (the Head of the Imperial Chancery)
