After the success of the Tour du Monde Series, which included D'Avilier's Voyage en Espagne (1862-73), the first single edition was published in France in 1874. The first English edition was published by Samson Low in 1876. Dan Malan in his book on Doré says "It should be noted that the pretty young senoritas tend to look an awful lot like Adelina Patti" the celebrated singer, with whom Doré was a close friend.
