SLAVERY. Handcarved Meershaum Pipe Bowl in the shape of a Negro Head,  ( without the amber pipe)  1891
with a silver dated ring,
Meershaum is the mineral Sepiolite a hydrous magnesium silicate. The mineral itself is the fossilized shells of tiny sea creatures some 50 million years ago, covered and compressed over the ages by layer upon layer of silt. Through seismic movements they became dislodged and can be found floating in areas of Turkey around the Black Sea. The first recorded use of meerschaum for making pipes was around 1723 and quickly became prized as the perfect material for providing a cool, dry, flavourful smoke. The porous nature of meerschaum draws moisture and tobacco tar into the stone.
