Of all Doré's engraved works this is the finest. These are the only illustrations which were steel engraved. The courtly romance, sensuality and chivalry that Prince Albert had admired in the verses, Doré translates in to vibrant black and white. Doré met Queen Victoria at a Garden Party in 1875 and conversed happily with her. She had bought his "Le Psaltérion" at the Salon in 1870, for Windsor Castle.
