The 'Thousand Character Text' was the second book learned by the Chinese schoolboy. The sentences are of 4 characters each. Chou was ordered when in prison to make a composition with a 1000 different characters jumbled together and supplied to him. He made this essay in a single night, but the effort turned his hair white. It is often called "pai t'ou wen", "the white-haired essay".
