SPAIN. CARLOS II (1661-1700, from 1665 King of Spain)  Letter in Spanish with translation, clearly signed 'yo el Rey' but in a rather constricted hand, to Cardinal Lazzaro PALLAVICINO (circa 1603-1680, from 1669 Cardinal, here 'Palavesino'), saying he has "seen with all pleasure what you say in your letter sending me good wishes for the Holy Nativity, which I greatly esteem, and accordingly I ... assure you of the affection I have for you, and that I will be pleased when occasion arises for you to experience it", ending "may Our Lord keep you in His continual care",   saying he has "seen with all pleasure what you say in your letter sending me good wishes for the Holy Nativity, which I greatly esteem, and accordingly I ... assure you of the affection I have for you, and that I will be pleased when occasion arises for you to experience it", ending "may Our Lord keep you in His continual care", saying he has "seen with all pleasure what you say in your letter sending me good wishes for the Holy Nativity, which I greatly esteem, and accordingly I ... assure you of the affection I have for you, and that I will be pleased when occasion arises for you to experience it", ending "may Our Lord keep you in His continual care",   Madrid, 28th February 1680,
1 side oblong folio and conjugate leaf, countersigned on Side 3 by MANUEL FRANCISCO DE LIRA, address and papered armorial seal of the Spanish dominions on Side 4, a few very small defects (two barely touching a letter each) and another in top of crown in papered seal, the legend is unaffected,
CARLOS II was always weakly. His mother was appointed Regent till he should come of age to rule, which he did at 14 in 1675. However, owing to his illnesses, the Queen decided to continue the Regency till her death in 1696. MANUEL FRANCISCO DE LIRA was forty years in royal service.
Previously Ambassador at The Hague, from 1679 to 1685 he was Secretario de Estado de la parte de Italia, then till 1691 Secretario del Despacho Universal. (TRANSLATION) Charles, by the Grace of God King of the Spains, of the two Sicilies, of Jerusalem, &c. Very Reverend Father in Christ Cardinal Paravesino, [sic, Pallavicino], my most dear and most beloved friend. I have seen with all pleasure what you say in your letter sending me good wishes for the Holy Nativity, which I greatly esteem, and accordingly I proceed to assure you of the affection I have for you, and that I will be pleased when occasion arises for you to experience it. And, Very Reverend Father in Christ Cardinal Paravesino, my most dear and my most beloved friend, may Our Lord .keep you in His continual care. Madrid, 28th February 1680.
