Jacob Abbott 1803-1879, was an American Author of Childrens Books. Although he never visited China, his interest in it at this period, before Commodore Perry, is unusual. The final chapter on the Bible in China shows examples of Chinese lettering, and the progress of the various missions there. He records the remarkable work of Robert Morrison, translating and printing the Bible, and his death on August 1st. in 1834.
