Budge was one of the most popular, well travelled and learned of scholars of the Middle East, particularly Egypt and Ethiopia. He came to the British Museum and expanded its collection of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities, making it the best in the World. Although from a poor background, through his own dilligence and with the influence of Sir John Stainer and William Gladstone, he received a First Class Education in his subjects. Having joined the British Museum he was sent on Antiquities Retrieving projects. His Nile Notes for Travellers, was commissioned by Thomas Cook for the growing market in Tourism to Egypt and the Antiquities.
